Rarely are African women given the opportunity to voice their worries, opinions, and reflections about the societies in which they live. Literature can serve as an important forum for the expression of strongly felt and occasionally upsetting opinions in circumstances where a virtuous woman is supposed to keep quiet. The multi-award-winning author Yvonne Vera compiles the works of numerous gifted authors from various African regions in this anthology. They participate in dramas in both public and private life as observers. No tolerance for complacency exists as a result of their stories’ critiques of modern attitudes and behaviours.

The authors of these short stories are all African women. The anecdotes ran the gamut from upbeat to quite desperate. There were numerous viewpoints from diverse social groups and geographical regions of the continent. The majority of the stories were written during a period of intense political oppression and provided open-minded, frequently unfiltered insight into how women were viewed in that society. In my opinion, this was the course’s high point.
