Polar City Red by Jim Laughter

The entire Lower 48 may be threatened by the devastating effects of “climate chaos,” from rising sea levels to a terrifying scarcity of food, fuel, and shelter. Millions of climate refugees from the southern lands will be migrating northward across North America, northern Asia, and Europe in the distant future, according to some. In Polar City Red, a family seeking safety in the frigid north learns of a secret city hidden in the heart of the former Alaska Territory, populated by outcasts, scientists, farmers, militia, and a very unique eccentric hunter. The setting of Polar City Red is a hypothetical Alaska in the year 2075. However, it’s equally possible that it’s Berlin, Oslo, or Tokyo. Both global warming and our concerns have no boundaries.

The first book to be published and openly marketed as a science fiction book was Polar City Red. In order to publicize my research on the idea of “polar cities,” I originally hired Jim to write the book in 2010. Jim received full credit and revenues. I requested Jim to produce a 2075-set novel with his own byline, narrative, and cast of people in order to give the idea a literary framework. The only things I specified were the subject matter—an Alaskan city—and the title—Polar City Red.

A family of Americans is forced to leave their Minnesota home and go north to a pioneering polar metropolis in northern Alaska in the movie Polar City Red. They face daily threats from robbers, marauders, and survivalists who live around the reinforced perimeters of Polar City Red. Because of Polar City Red, we’re talking about climate fiction today. Laughter’s book was a mixture of science fiction and climate fiction. Because of this, I view it as a key work in the development of climate fiction literature. It is nonetheless accessible in paperback.

I was sucked in by the time I finished reading the prologue. My intellect and heart were captivated by the description of the earth in 2075, which was backed up by scientific study and the most likely consequences. All of us have heard the worries expressed about global warming. This book assisted me in accepting that truth.

The plot develops swiftly. As a family fleeing the annihilation of the earth is saved by a resident of Polar City Red, tension increases. As this family learns the city’s social customs, the tension starts. They choose to join the survivors because they have nowhere else to go.

The remainder of the narrative comes to light, as they say. The threat of raiders, who try to acquire food and resources for their survival, forces the city to defend itself.
