Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
Reality in 2045 is a depressing place. Wade Watts only truly feels alive when he is logged into the OASIS, a large virtual environment where the majority of people spend their days. A number of difficult puzzles based on the eccentric developer of the OASIS’ love of vintage pop culture are left behind after he passes away. Whoever solves them first will receive authority over the OASIS as well as his enormous riches.
Wade then deciphers the first hint. Suddenly, he is surrounded by opponents who will do anything to win this reward. The race has begun, and winning is your only chance of surviving.

OASIS (Ontologically Anthropocentric Sensory Immersive Simulation), a massively multiplayer online virtual reality environment that was first created as a multiplayer game but quickly developed into a platform for commerce, education, social interaction, and entertainment used by billions of people worldwide, has largely replaced the Internet as the transport layer by the middle of the twenty-first century. The only restriction on the use of immersive virtual reality in the OASIS is the user’s ability to afford network connection devices. A very realistic experience was made possible with top-notch visors, sound systems, body motion sensors, and haptic feedback, all connected to a strong interface console.
Additionally, it was nearly free. You simply had to pay a one-time, $ 25 lifetime sign-up fee to access the OASIS, similar to the quarter you would insert into an arcade videogame machine. The only expenses for users were the hardware they used to connect (which varied greatly in price and experience quality) and the bandwidth needed to connect to the network. Users did not pay anything to use the OASIS itself. However, the latter cost was low because the majority of the processing was done locally. Within the simulation, GSS generated revenue by renting out or selling virtual property (sometimes known as “surreal estate”).
GSS flourished as the OASIS spread throughout society. Halliday maintained his position as the company’s largest stakeholder after purchasing Ogden (“Og”) Morrow’s former portion following what was rumoured to be a disagreement between the two, the specifics of which had never been made public. Halliday’s net worth reached over $240 billion by 2040, with almost all of it held in GSS stock. Then, after fifteen years of what some claimed was self-imposed solitude brought on by insanity, Halliday passed away from cancer. He was a bachelor with no living heirs, family, or acquaintances, according to reports. On the OASIS, his passing was revealed in a five-minute film named Anaorak’s Invitation.
