Recursion by Blake Crouch

The reality is flawed.

It initially appears to be an illness. An outbreak that has no known cause and sends its victims insane with memories of a life they never had. The force that is sweeping the globe, however, is not a pathogen. A remarkable revelation has only just begun to cause shockwaves, and the fabric of time itself, not our minds, is what is at risk.

In a remote laboratory, neuroscientist Helena Smith is unaware that she alone is in possession of the solution to this enigma as well as the means of retaliation. Detective Barry Sutton is closing in on the truth in New York City.

Before the world and Barry and Helena become enmeshed in an endless cycle of chaos, they must face their opponent together.

Recursion is a hybrid of science fiction, suspenseful thriller, and epic love story.  Barry Sutton, an NYPD investigator, meets a woman who looks to have False Memory Syndrome, a condition that some belief is a quickly spreading virus that causes sufferers to have recollections of a different existence. But it’s actually the creation of neuroscientist Helena Smith, not a condition at all. At some point, Barry and Helena cross paths in an effort to preserve both themselves and the world.

An original science fiction book without a sequel or prequel. While developing a total immersion gaming system for a video game firm, Dr. Helena Smith unknowingly builds a time machine. After realizing that Dr Smith has created a time machine, her assistant kills himself after imprinting himself with an impressive earlier recollection. In his earlier incarnation, he awakens and begins constructing the time machine.

Only an earlier moment in your life that you can easily recall is accessible in the time machine. such as the purchase of a new car, the birth or death of a kid, etc. The real kicker is that everyone on Earth travels backwards in time with you, but they are completely unaware of their previous location until they arrive at the moment you started the time machine. Few-day shifts are scarcely recognized by the general public. The public is well aware of forty-year time jumps, nevertheless. And because everyone wants their own time machine, a terrible future is in store.

The beginning of the book is rather plodding. Then, at the halfway mark, it starts to move very swiftly with all the timing jumps. Netflix is adapting the novel into a series.

When it comes to the time travel idea in popular culture, there is a well-established canon. There is some flexibility within that canon to go outside the norm while still remaining orthodox. This book’s time travel hypothesis is wholly unfounded. It’s ridiculous, and I find it surprising that so little time and space is devoted to even arguing the science—or lack thereof—behind it. But this story’s idea is really original. The aim is to be commended, and I anticipate reading more from the author.

A meditation on pain, sorrow, memory, and significance lies beneath all the science and wacky time travel theories: “Life with a cheat code isn’t life. Our existence is not something that should be designed or maximized to minimize suffering.
