Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston

What transpires when the Prince of Wales and America’s First Son fall in love?

The friction between his Royal Highness Prince Henry, a fictitious Prince Henry, and Alex, the son of the US president, is fueled by the tabloids in the book. They don’t really get along, but they need to resolve this major international incident before it sparks a media frenzy. They, therefore, agree to go out and masquerade as “best” buddies after sitting down. However, because Alex and Henry are thrown together, they start dating secretly.

This novel has several layers of politics, which seems to be what readers, particularly younger romance readers, are yearning for right now. That’s because people right now, especially those who use social media, attach great importance to American politics.

Alex Claremont-Diaz was immediately cast as the American version of a young royal after his mother was elected president. His image is pure millennial marketing gold for the White House. He is handsome, personable, and smart. There is only one issue: Alex is at odds with Henry, the real prince, who lives across the pond. And when a photo of an Alex-Henry altercation is obtained by the tabloids, American and British ties deteriorate.

The leaders of the family, the state, and other handlers come up with a strategy for damage control that involves arranging a truce between the two enemies. What starts off as a staged, Instagrammable friendship develops into something deeper and riskier than either Alex or Henry could have anticipated.

Soon after, Alex finds himself falling headlong into a secret relationship with Henry, who is shockingly unpretentious. This relationship has the potential to ruin the campaign, upend two countries, and raise the question of whether love really can rescue the world. Where do we get the strength and bravery to be who we were meant to be? And how can we develop the ability to show our true colours? The movie Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston shows that true love isn’t always tactful.

This fictional homosexual romance book was written by author Casey McQuiston as a type of reaction to how 2016 ended out. She was able to tell the stories of Alex and Henry because we were given figures from a type of parallel universe in place of the political and royal figureheads that we have in the US and the UK. Her writing of the characters is what makes this book so compelling. The world in which they reside is full of interesting information, particularly the political intrigue that Henry, a member of the Royal Family, and Alex both have to deal with (there is some really interesting political intrigue involving someone Alex knows).

But McQuiston gives these two characters life by investing her entire being in them. There is stability in who and what they are despite their personal character arcs (Alex in particular), even as they change and advance as persons. Even though Alex initially strikes us as being somewhat unlikeable, by the time his feelings for Henry start to surface, he has changed into a character that we can at least tolerate, and by the time we reach the book’s final third, we find ourselves not only rooting for him but also developing a genuine affection for him. Henry stands out because he exudes a sense of royalty.

He is completely lovely, as one might anticipate, but as soon as Alex begins to realize his true self, he instantly develops into a likeable, albeit tragic, figure. As their connection develops, McQuiston expertly shows how both of them truly start to thrive as they learn to feel for one another and for themselves. Something horrible was going to happen as I read this, and lo and behold, it most certainly did. When these two meet repeatedly for what is obviously more than simply a friendly visit, McQuiston catches the public outcry…
