Revenant Gun by Yoon Ha Lee

Shuos Jedao is awake… …and nothing is as he remembers. He’s a teenager, a cadet-a nobody in the body of an old man; a general in command of an elite force. And he’s the most feared, and reviled, a man in the galaxy. Jedao carries orders from Hexarch Nirai Kujen to re-conquer the fractured pieces of the hexarchate. But he has no memory of ever being a soldier, let alone a general, and the Kel soldiers under his command hate him for a massacre he can’t remember committing. Kujen’s friendliness can’t hide the fact that he’s a tyrant. And what’s worse, Jedao and Kujen are being hunted by an enemy who knows more about Jedao than he does himself…

This is a mathematical variation of the genre of space opera. The foundation of the entire sequence is supported by what is known as “calendrical mathematics,” which is difficult to express. Therefore, a calendar that spans the entire universe—which is never actually explained—basically enables the ships to function and enables the implementation of a variety of unusual weapon effects. The military, the bureaus in charge of the math and the calendars, and the secret agency, which seems to be behind everything, are among the various factions that are constantly at war with one another in this universe.

The Hexarchate is a complete mess. In order to retake control of the Hexarchate, Hexarch Kujen seeks to reestablish the high calendar. Kujen is a cruel tyrant while also being silky and smooth. He has a well-kept secret regarding both the high calendar and himself. He will stop at nothing to get the calendar and the Hexarchate back to how they were prior to the RAVEN STRATAGEM occurrences. As a result, he seeks the assistance of Shuos Jedeo, one of the greatest military geniuses in history. However, this particular Jedeo is not who he seems to be or who we think he actually is.

The former Kel Cheris, who seeks to end Kujen’s rule, is one of the characters in REVENANT GUN. Kujen is the beneficiary of Servitor Hemiola’s loyalty, and here is the opposite side. The large cast would allow me to continue. But suffice it to say that the large cast plays a part in the political intrigue and intricate plotting; there is plenty going on in this book to keep a reader interested for an entire night of reading. The book is beautifully written and moves quickly. Despite all the action, I find it to be a much easier novel to follow than NINEFOX GAMBIT and, to a lesser extent, RAVEN STRATAGEM…
