For a very long period, Mr and Mrs Wright have had problems. A weekend trip to Scotland that Adam and Amelia win might be just what their marriage needs. Adam Wright, a self-described workaholic and screenwriter, has had face blindness all of his life. Even his own wife is unrecognizable to him, let alone acquaintances or family.

The pair exchanges customary presents for their anniversaries, such as paper, cotton, earthenware, and tin, and each year Adam’s wife also sends him a letter that she never lets him read. Before now. They didn’t win this vacation by chance, but they are both aware that this weekend will either save or ruin their marriage. Someone doesn’t want them to have a happily ever after because one of them is lying.

This book was more than just a straightforward thriller. It was told in alternating parts in the present by Adam, Amelia, and Robin. Other chapters are intermingled as well, one of which was written by Adam’s wife on each wedding anniversary. We learn about their history, including Adam’s personality as a failed novelist who now creates scripts, the wife’s grief over her inability to have children, her employment at a Battersea dog shelter, and their steadily disintegrating marriage.

Because of Feeney’s skill as a writer and the well-developed characters, I felt as though I knew Adam and Amelia and the events that occurred in their marriage. As a result, I continued reading even though I was undecided as to whether either of them—or Robin—had what it took to do something truly terrible. I sank deeper into my armchair in Arizona as I read Feeney’s descriptions of the untamed Scottish location and the icy chapel, enjoying the sunlight that was flooding in. Ah, the pleasures of travelling virtually!

Then, whoosh! Feeney changes the plot about halfway through the novel. In fact, I was gasping. I didn’t anticipate this turn of events, and anyone who discloses it in a book review deprives other readers of tremendous joy. Additionally, it is not the final twist. After another 20 or so pages, I had just settled in and thought, “Well, this is denouement time,” when suddenly, boom! Yet another turn.

It speaks well of Feeney that she can introduce so many turns without having the reader feel misled, in my opinion. I adore the way she told this incredible story. It makes me want to reread the book to see if anything was revealed earlier that would have been able to better prepare me. however, as a library book
