Rodolphe Töpffer by David Kunzle
Finally, Töpffer, the creator of comics, has made a triumphant return to print. Topffer’s early picture story experiments, which served as the inspiration for contemporary comics in both Europe and the United States, are collected in this superbly researched book by David Kunzle. These publications were previously exclusively accessible through research libraries and rare book collections. It not only contains all eight of Töpffer’s published stories, but also a few previously unrecognized omissions, variants, and incomplete works. These stories have an absurdist spirit that is striking and captivating, and they are not simply for comic book fans or history buffs. They are genuinely enjoyable.

The stories in Töpffer’s writing are extremely complex and typically 100 pages or longer. Drawings and handwritten prose are merged on a page to tell his stories. Because there is a strong taboo against doing so in Western culture, he placed the text below each image, but they still worked well together. His handwriting is evident throughout the stories, which are quite deep and engaging.
