Sirens by Joseph Knox
It’s risky enough trying to get inside the mysterious criminal Zain Carver’s inner circle. Managing to pull it done while saving the daughter of a politician who ran away from Zain’s influence? Impossible. Aidan Waits is the ideal candidate for the position as a result. He was loathed by his superiors, had emotional harm, and was in disgrace. Or, to put it another way, totally disposable.
Aidan, though, is a born survivor. He discovers that nothing is what it seems as he digs more into Zain’s eerie world. Young women who frequently turn up dead are drawn into Zain’s orbit by his alluring, Gatsby-like persona. But is Zain actually at fault? Will Isabelle follow suit?

The novel takes place in the gloomy and chilly city of Manchester, which is fighting to make it through the new century and is full of stunning and sad young femme Fatales known as the Sirens to whom Aidan and I are helplessly drawn. There are the typical evil characters, a dubious police chief, a wealthy, influential, but absent father of Isabelle, who is both beautiful and vulnerable, and “Bug,” Aidan’s eccentric but interesting buddy.
There are other subordinate police officers and other individuals whose loyalties and motivations are ambiguous, and the main antagonist exhibits some dubious heroic characteristics toward Aidan. The characters are all expertly drawn, devoid of any clichés, and wholly authentic and alive. Even the supporting cast members are created with passion and attention.
It centres on a detective named Aidan Waits who frequently veers off course. It’s incredibly grim and dismal. He is taken on to the case after a girl goes missing at the beginning of the novel to try to find her. He is thrust into the shadowy world of organized crime and prostitution.
Aidan Waits is a musician I adore. Another dark, unstable man who you’d never want to go out with but who you’d probably want to sleep with is a recurring theme in this story. I adore how Joseph Knox portrays him in these tales.
