Spellbreaker by Charlie N. Holmberg

When Elsie Camden was a young girl, she discovered that there were two types of wizards in the world: those who acquired the ability to cast spells via payment and those who were born with it. However, she is breaking the law by using magic without a license. Elsie is hired by the Cowls, a clandestine organization, to use her spell-breaking abilities to fight back against the nobility and aid the common man. She has always been a fan of the Robin Hood story.

Bacchus Kelsey, a skilled magician, discovers Elsie dispelling an enchantment just as he is about to achieve mastery of one tricky spell. Elsie makes a deal in order to keep her secret safe. If Bacchus doesn’t turn her in, she’ll assist him in repairing troublesome spells around his land. Together, they build Elsie’s confidence in him and her affection for him. She also worries about the increase in wizard murders and the theft of the spellbooks that their dead bodies leave behind.

For a mischievous spell breaker like Elsie, there is a lot to discover about her abilities, her family, the fascinating Bacchus, and the unknown perils that lurk at every turn on the journey she is meant to take. Will she solve the riddle in time to save everything she cherishes?

This book is undoubtedly for you if you enjoy mystery and adventure. I could actually picture what the author mentioned since she writes in such depth. Elsie is a kindhearted person who puts others before herself. In addition to looking for her family, Elsie is keeping a magical secret. With my review, I don’t wish to reveal any information. Just be aware that there are so many detours and turns that you must pay close attention to avoid missing the dramatic reveal.

Elsie, an unregistered spell breaker who was inexplicably split from her family as a young child, has been casting spells for a clandestine organization she refers to as the Cowls which resembles Robin Hood. Even though her work is forbidden, she will stop at nothing to aid those who are victimized by the elite’s magic.

Bacchus, who aspires to become a Master Spellmaker, captures her. He is focused on obtaining a highly special spell that is extremely rare. If Elsie will assist him, he plans to conceal her work.

Elsie is beginning to realize that the individuals she thought she could trust might be a part of a diabolical scheme to kill spell masters and take their magic as their working connection develops into friendship, and possibly something more. And contrary to what she believes, the Cowls may have more to do with her childhood.

The London of this universe is in the 1800s. Gaslights, carriages, and corsets are all present. Additionally, there are disparities in terms of class and gender. A social justice theme runs through the entirety of this novel. Elsie has a strong desire to aid the underprivileged and a distaste for magic, which is typically used by men.

Elsie, the primary character, is defined by this as well as her uncertainties and feeling unlovable. Bacchus encounters his own social difficulties. He is an illegitimate child of mixed race who lived most of his youth with his father in Barbados. Despite his wealth, he still has to contend with stigmas.
