Ben, a journalist, and Jill, who works at the hospital where the Man from Mars is held, talk about the implications of the Man from Mars. After he controls the majority of Lunar Enterprises and all of Mars. In any scenario, the Secretary General’s administration is powerless to maintain his life. Finally, at last, something happens: Ben tries to free the Man but fails miserably; Jill then tries to break into the prison with the Man. They manage to flee to Ben’s house, but the henchmen are nearby. They knock on the door, there is a fight, and then it’s over. They turn to another benefactor named Jubal, who spends the remainder of the book—almost half of it—hiding Jill and the Man.
There, Jubal tries to learn as much as he can about the Martian and Mars while he considers how to help the Man and get Ben back. After the Martian once more causes the policemen to vanish, the henchmen return, ready to arrest everyone. Jubal then succeeds in bluffing the Secretary-General into ordering the second arresting team to return and agreeing to meet with the Man from Mars with him, Jubal, acting as the Martian’s official representative. Jubal does his best at the conference to ensure the safety of the Man: He gives the Secretary-General the authority to manage the Martian’s finances by paying him however much he deems appropriate.
Having thus ensured their safety, the Martians continue to live and study at Jubal’s home. As the archbishop requests a one-on-one conversation with the Martian, the latter identifies the former’s evilness and incorporates him. They attend a Fosterite church service where people gamble, go to the bar and tell stories with women. When the Man from Mars has finished learning everything he can at Jubal’s, he and Jill leave for the rest of the globe. They join a circus act where Jill and the Martian see a levitation performance that the Martian actually pulls off. Nevertheless, the marks see straight through it, so they are ineffective.
After listening to a snake charmer preach about the Fosterites and making her a water brother, they go once more. They then relocate to Las Vegas, where Jill works as a showgirl and the Martian works as a croupier and explains pornographic images. The Martian then reads all the books about the various religions in San Francisco without understanding a thing. The Martian then bursts out laughing as he finally understands people while watching monkeys during their visit to a zoo.
