Summer Lightning by P. G. Wodehouse

Ronnie Fish, the nephew of Lord Emsworth, wants money to marry Sue, the chorus girl he loves. But since Lord Emsworth is his trustee, he is unlikely to let his nephew wed a simple chorus girl, especially since Ronnie’s most recent business venture was a nightclub that failed spectacularly. Hugo Carmody, who was once his business partner in this disastrous endeavour, is now Lord Emsworth’s secretary and is in love with Millicent, the nephew of the Lord. Percy Pilbeam, who occupies a spot at Blandings in his position as a private investigator, sends Sue flowers. Ronnie is really envious of Sue and Hugo because Sue has been dancing with Hugo as well.

The Hon. Galahad’s choice to publish his lewd memoirs is another factor that keeps the people of Blandings and the surrounding area from being able to rest easily at night. Ronnie decides to take his uncle’s prize pig in an effort to obtain his money from Lord Emsworth. The capable Baxter, once Lord Emsworth’s secretary, comes back to the castle at Lady Constance’s request. The stage is set for a classic Wodehouse farce with all these subplots and deceptions going on.

A romantic comedy and a detective narrative have been combined to create Summer Lightning. It takes place at Wodehouse’s well-known fictional country idyll, Blandings Castle. A lot is occurring. Star-crossed lovers, a kidnapped pig, a scandalous memoir, and a sleazy private eye named Pilbeam are all present. Sue Brown, a chorus girl who is far too beautiful and admirable for any guy in the kingdom, is our heroine. Sue Brown has chosen one of the least deserving people to give her entire golden heart to. That is the only issue I have. There isn’t much room for Sue’s further development because the author has opted to concentrate on the undoubtedly humorous plot twists and turns.

Her character, who seemed so tantalizingly hopeful at first, almost becomes boring by the book’s conclusion, becoming little more than a passive and dejected viewer of the events happening all around her. Her maker ought to have given her a better handshake.
