Tales by H. P. Lovecraft

Lovecraft has a profoundly cosmic, materialist perspective on life. His stories focus a lot on how challenging it is for us to truly comprehend or grasp anything that is outside of what we know through our senses, whether that difficulty is linguistic or perceptual. His characters lose their minds or have trouble expressing terror. They can never provide more than a sketchy justification or description. He often uses indirect descriptions, analogies, and objects that resemble other things to evoke anxiety in his readers. His literary style builds gradually and crescendos. I believe Poe is the author who is most comparable to him. Some people find his writing to be quite annoying, calling it “purple prose.” Too many “eldritches” and “hideous stenches” are present.

A fairly complete compilation of Lovecraft’s works. The majority of the most well-known works are present. The book itself is a professionally produced collection by well-known American writers. Lovecraft, a “major American author,” does he qualify?

The book itself is a work of art, a substantial, elegant volume with flawless binding that anyone would be happy to display on their bookshelf. The twenty-two stories included were expertly chosen by Straub, who also included less “canonical” works like “Cool Air” in addition to well-known classics like “The Outsider,” “The Rats in the Walls,” “The Case of Charles Dexter Ward,” “At the Mountains of Madness,” and the delightfully campy (but slightly racist) “Herbert West: Reanimator.” Even connoisseurs like Mr Joshi, I believe, would concur that the stories that made the final selection possibly represent Lovecraft at his best.
