As children of the 1980s approach middle age, they reflect on the excitement of their youth when everything was exciting and full of adventure but the world still appeared to be disintegrating as a result of the end of industrialization in the West. This is how Stlenhag’s work purposefully plays on nostalgia. The Loop’s super-science creates a wholly false sense of nostalgia for things like robots and space-bending portals that never existed, which emphasizes the fact that all of our nostalgic feelings are for a past that we have chosen to remember rather than one that actually existed.
