I find the writing to be really lovely. We all know that storylines are beyond Raymond Chandler’s ability. If he was at a loss for what to do, he brought in a man brandishing a gun, he said. The language, however, I recall that a few years ago, an American publisher acquired the publishing rights to Raymond Chandler’s Philip Marlowe and commissioned stories about Philip Marlowe from a number of contemporary crime writers. I agreed to one because it sounded like fun.

Being able to read all the novels again made me very happy. I discovered that while I was able to make the jokes, I wasn’t able to do them as well as he could. That’s probably why I appreciate Chandler so much—his use of language is incredibly restrained.

Additionally, he has the ability to employ humour in a way that very few authors can—to build tension rather than relieve it. Normal comic relief involves building up the tension and then releasing it with a joke. But Chandler really managed to increase the tension with humour, which I believe is a tremendous accomplishment.
