According to Judy Carter, if you have a sense of humour, you can learn how to make comedy your career. The Comedy Bible by Carter offers detailed guidance on how to do everything from writing a spec sitcom to producing jokes for radio and greeting cards. She guides readers in developing, polishing, and promoting their work after first assisting them in determining which type of comedy writing or performing best suits them.
Carter provides a series of day-by-day exercises that are based on her many years as a famous stand-up comedian and the head of a nationally recognized comedy school, using the practical workbook structure that was so successful in her popular first book,
Additionally, there are helpful hints and counsel from some of the best comedians working today, including Bernie Brillstein, Christopher Titus, and Richard Lewis. She discusses the benefits and drawbacks of the many comedy genres—stand-up, writing jokes, speeches, and scripts; one-person performances; and humour essays—and demonstrates how to adapt your work for each. She gives advice on how to develop your “genuine” voice, which is the fundamental foundation of humour. And perhaps most significantly, Carter demonstrates how to sell a finished product to a buyer and negotiate a contract in order to advance it to the point of making money.
When I eventually decided to pursue stand-up comedy, I enrolled in Judy Carter’s course. Additionally, this book is mainly geared toward those who desire to perform stand-up comedy or who might be expected to speak in front of an audience and need some jokes for a business presentation. The major thing I discovered was that the key to stand-up is to perform on stage frequently and to write frequently.
I also discovered that every comedian has a point of view as a result of reading this book and taking her class. Every comedian, according to her, either says, “It is hard to…,” or “I adore being…”, and you have to fill in the spaces. And because you have a pattern to follow after that breakdown, writing is much easier. So it’s not a bad place to start if you want some advice for this kind of thing.
