It’s been a long-running mystery. The cottage Saffy and her husband Tom recently inherited is getting a kitchen addition. Two remains that have been buried for thirty years are discovered when the hole in the back is dug. As they weren’t even born, Saffy and Tom are certainly not involved, but Rose, Saffy’s grandmother, resided there at the time.
Only Rose, who has dementia and can only partially understand what she says when questioned, is likely to be able to solve the puzzle. Several points of view are used, as are the years 2018 and 1980. In this small hamlet, Rose was evading someone, but from whom and for what reason? Can she trust the boarder she takes in?
Rose, Saffron (Saffy) Cutler’s grandmother, who recently entered care due to increasing Alzheimer’s, left Skelton Place to her. Before Rose was placed in a nursing facility, Saffy and her mother were unaware of this property. Saffy is excited to share the cottage with Tom because she adores her grandmother. While they wait for their child to arrive, they intend to renovate. They never anticipated finding two skeletons in the garden that appeared to be older than 30 years. The police launch an inquiry as soon as they are notified in order to determine who they are and how they got there. They naturally want to speak with the former owner, but will Rose be able to provide any information?
When she is awake, Rose describes how someone came to harm the baby and how someone passed away. Are the bones Rose’s fault? It seems that someone doesn’t want this case to be solved while all of this is going on. Saffy is threatened, Lorna is hassled, and the house is broken into. Who wants the secrets from thirty years ago to stay a secret?
