Poppy has always preferred to be in charge of her own life rather than the lives of others, but she must now decide whether to give up her birthright or accept the gilded crown and take the throne of the Queen of Flesh and Fire. But as the bloody secrets and dark crimes of the kingdoms eventually come to light, a long-forgotten force emerges to pose a real threat. And they will do whatever it takes to prevent Poppy from ever wearing the crown.
However, what lies in wait in the far west, where the Queen of Blood and Ash has her own plans that she has waited hundreds of years to carry out, poses the biggest threat to them and Atlantia. Travelling to the Lands of the Gods and arousing the King himself must be Poppy and Casteel’s impossibly impossible plan. They will find out exactly how far they are ready to go for their people—and each other—as surprising truths and the harshest betrayals come to light and opponents arise to threaten all Poppy and Casteel have battled for.
The plot mostly centres on Poppy’s journey of self-discovery. As the novel progresses, she gradually learns more about her past. And almost every time we decide on a new component that will give her a title, we find out that a bigger and more potent title already exists that should take its place. Poppy is still learning how powerful she is and what she is capable of. Poppy had dreamed of making her own decisions ever since the beginning of the story and being imprisoned as the Maiden.
She repeatedly discovers that others close to her have predetermined notions about how she ought to act and behave and that they wish to use her as a prop or a piece of their puzzle. Those characters have occasionally attempted to restrain her if she veers off course. Poppy, though, is uncontrollable. She’s not going to let anyone else choose for her any longer. She also won’t let her unprocessed emotions influence her decisions, however how difficult they may be. Her pattern of behaviour impressed and irritated me at the same time. Poppy had to force herself to stop utilizing her abilities in terrible ways several times.
