The Dark Descent by David G. Hartwell
It tells the story of two friends who spent the night on an island covered with willow trees while on a boating vacation on the upper Danube. It becomes clear that the island is the focal point of an entirely alien source. It’s something even more ethereal than that; it’s not a ghost, it’s not an elemental. The night is filled with various manifestations, and in the morning they discover a victim of whatever is residing there. It’s incredibly strange. There is no physical or graphic terror at all; it is pure horror.
