Paris serves as the setting for the detective, Auguste Dupin. The story of Dupin’s adventures is told by an unknown admiring buddy. Dupin is the prototypical great detective and a bright thinker.

Two ladies were murdered. One of them is discovered in a chamber that is shut off and locked, and there is no way in or out. You cannot pass through either the floor or the ceiling. How did it occur? That is the main conundrum.

It was actually a highly important historical event that was also very entertaining and influential in many other ways. Since mysteries these days appear to invariably have a great investigator, it certainly hit a nerve.
