The Foundation Trilogy by Isaac Asimov
A new chapter in the future of man is opened by FOUNDATION. Hari Seldon and his team of psychologists must establish a new organization, the Foundation, which is devoted to art, science, and technology, as the Old Empire disintegrates into barbarism across the galaxy’s million worlds. This organization will serve as the foundation for a new empire.
The epic struggle for dominance in the chaos of the stars, in which man stands at the precipice of a new, enlightened life that could be easily destroyed by the old forces of barbarism, is depicted in FOUNDATION AND EMPIRE.
After the First Empire is overthrown, the Seldon Plan is carried out, and in SECOND FOUNDATION, the greatest threat to it is revealed to be a hazardous mutant strain gone rogue that develops a mind capable of bending men’s wills, controlling their minds, altering their passions, and more.

This is one of Isaac Asimov’s finest works. This story centres on the dissolution of the Galactic Empire, which included the whole Milky Way galaxy. In the story, which is set 50,000 years in the future, there are 25 million inhabited planets with a population in the quintillions. The inhabitants of the galaxy were unaware of any other forms of administration because the planet of origin had long since been forgotten. No one in the cosmos knew what was going to happen.
Nobody besides a man by the name of Hari Seldon, a psychologist. He developed the idea of psychohistory, foreseeing the actions of the general populace. One person’s conduct is unpredictable, but the behaviour of large groups of individuals may be predicted based on how they respond to any given incident. It is simpler to predict their reactions as the mass increases.
Dr Seldon predicts 30,000 years of barbarism, or a dark period, for humanity after the fall of an empire. Dr Seldon establishes two foundations “at opposite ends of the galaxy” in order to observe and intervene when necessary when a major crisis arises so that the Foundation, in this case, the First Foundation, can deal with it and continue its work. While the fall of this empire could not be prevented, the period of barbarism could be decreased from 30,000 years down to 1,000 years.
This trilogy is based on the book “The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire,” according to Dr Asimov himself. The similarities are obvious in this case. When the Roman Empire was in existence, Rome itself was also referred to as Terminus. Before the Renaissance and the creation of the nation-state, after Rome fell, it did divide into feudal kingdoms. Don’t forget about the Germanic tribes in northern Europe known as the Barbarians.
You now have a fascinating book in your hands. As the empire disintegrates, small kingdoms emerge, competing with one another for supremacy and fighting intermittently. There are various planets with various physical characteristics; one planet’s inhabitants live on the border while it always faces the sun.
