Marnie accepts a job as a gardener, which comes with a small cottage to call her own, with nothing more than her two green thumbs. Aside from a few minor hard spots, the garden is lovely and full of roses, lavender, and honeysuckle. Which is more than what can be said about Ned Mars, her next-door neighbour. Ned is not the same trouble-free person Marnie remembers from her undergraduate days. His heart is as wounded as hers from a recent romance.

Marnie is working to restore a garden in a charming little village in Lancashire now that she has returned to the country. Because of her stalker/possessive ex-husband, who seemed to have finally moved on, she has been hiding in France. It turns out that Ned Mars, an old college acquaintance who is aware of some of the gossip her ex-boyfriend circulated about her, is the owner of the garden. One of Ms Ashley’s signature novels includes endearing townspeople, a lot of gardening, and a treasure hunt.
It’s a great book to read. Ned and Marnie are wonderful people who go well together. The supporting cast of individuals adds a lot to the plot with the perfect combination of warmth, weirdness, and fun. Lancashire is stunning in and of itself, and the scene perfectly captures those qualities. The gardening-related passages are interesting since they add to the atmosphere and text.
