The House at the End of the World by Dean Koontz

Katie lives by herself on Jacob’s Ladder island in a stone home that resembles a fortress as she withdraws from a heartbreaking loss and crushing injustice. She used to be a rising star in the art world and now turns to paint for solace.

Ringrock, a neighbouring island, conceals a government research centre. And now, two agents are on Jacob’s Ladder looking for someone or something that they won’t name. Although these individuals have a menacing aspect about them, a much greater threat has arrived that is so odd that even the island’s animals are very alarmed.

Katie quickly finds herself engaged in a terrible and epic struggle with an unknown foe. Nevertheless, Katie is not actually alone as a brave young girl emerges from the severe storm.

An all-pervasive horror that might bring about the end of the world is working against Katie and her friend as they struggle across a dark and unsettling landscape. On a private island she owns, Katie lives alone. The island, which the previous owner gave the name Jacob’s Ladder, is, or was, secluded and secure. A few miles away is Oak Haven, a smaller island with a Cape Cod-style home perched atop it. A couple, their daughter, and her nanny reside there. On the third, bigger island, the couple both had jobs. A sizable facility on Ringrock Island is being used by a government organization for research or some other purpose. Nobody outside of the staff has any knowledge about it. Also, nobody who works there talks about it. There are rumours that an EPA site is conducting environmental testing.

Katie has a solitary existence and shares her house with her artwork and four tiny urns containing her family’s ashes. Three gang members shot several hundred tiny lead pellets at the owner of the ice cream shop while her husband and two daughters were inside. The glass in the store exploded, killing Katie’s family in the process. Katie purchased Jacob’s Ladder with their savings, insurance payouts, and settlement money. The ashes of a family pet are kept in the small fourth urn.

Ringrock’s disturbance is ready to rudely interrupt her peace and seclusion. Her island is invaded by explosions, gunshots, helicopters, and drones terrified by a peculiarly reflective fox she named Michael J.

Jacob’s Ladder, Michael J., and Katie won’t ever be secure again. Fantastic, disturbed, and terrifying characters. Katie must deal with an ancient evil. Old and wicked in every way. It has a lot of faces. It exists only to exterminate all life on Earth and then move on. Too little? She doesn’t get along well with the appropriate government agency, and they won’t give up looking for her.
