The Labyrinth by Simon Stålenhag

A lone bunker located far into the woods is reached by an eight-wheeled truck trundling across a desolate landscape of ash and destroyed structures. Three people are travelling in the car: Charlie, a young child, and two scientists who intend to use the outpost as a base for their research into phenomena that could end the world.

As the project progresses, the compound’s seclusion and claustrophobia threaten to drive each expedition member insane. The participants of the expedition discover themselves rushing into destruction as they are forced to confront their own dark past and the struggles of the haves and have-nots.

In a post-apocalyptic Earth where two siblings are unexpectedly confronted with a violent and terrible past, Stalenhag invites us to respond to this topic. Extreme skill was used to create the lonely, foreboding atmosphere and the calm anticipation leading up to the point of no return. Even the most commonplace pieces of furniture in the Granhammar station seemed to have an ominous air about them, like the quiet before the storm, despite the sparseness of their ostensibly “civilized” surroundings. Of course, history has never been particularly polite at any point in time.

Nothing was as it seemed and further calamity was waiting over the horizon by the deceptively pleasant interactions between Sigrid, her brother Matt, and occasionally Charlie and the devastated landscape outside their doors.

Sigrid is unquestionably the most morally dubious figure we meet since she can simultaneously acknowledge her guilt and defend her actions. She asserts that because he is continuously plagued by his demons, Matt is not very good at this. Yet, the truth is that they were both persuaded to act inhumanely in an ironic attempt to protect mankind.
