Since roughly a year ago, Hannah and Owen have been quite happily married. To be with him, she relocated across the country from Manhattan to a neighbourhood of floating homes in Sausalito, California. The one drawback to her happy marriage is that Bailey, Owen’s 16-year-old daughter, makes sure Hannah is aware of how she feels about her joining the family. Hannah is a patient person who is prepared to move cautiously and wait for Bailey to change her mind.
As Hannah turns on the TV one day, she notices her husband’s business making headlines. His boss is being detained for fraud, and it appears that several of his staff may have been complicit. Many people are upset and many have suffered significant financial losses. In fact, Kenneth Lay and Bernie Madoff are contrasted with Owen’s boss. Hannah tries to reach Owen after hearing the news, but she is unable to do so. She eventually gets a note from Owen that just says, “Protect her.” With with a substantial amount of cash, he also writes Bailey a message that reads, “You know what matters about me.” There isn’t much to go on, and none of it offers much solace.
Hannah is aware that Owen would not flee and abandon Bailey unless there was a more significant cause other than being embroiled in a controversy. It had to be more than that. Hannah begins to worry if Owen could have ties to Texas when a federal marshal from Texas arrives and starts asking questions. Bailey and Hannah feel compelled to collaborate and try to solve Owen’s disappearance together. Only one thing is certain: Owen is not who he claims to be.
Hannah transforms from a seemingly ordinary woman to the wife of a man who is both missing and the subject of a police investigation. Later, she comes to understand that her spouse is unquestionably not who he claims to be. The fact that Hannah and Bailey have a tumultuous relationship just makes the situation more precarious. Hannah takes on Bailey’s care on her own after they discover that they don’t really get along without Owen to guide them.
