The story centers on George Orr, who learns that his dreams can literally change the past and present, and Doctor Haber, who believes he can improve the world by controlling Orr’s dreams. The novel is set toward the end of the millennium, making it the future when Le Guin wrote it but the past for this reader. However, things quickly go wrong, such as when Haber advises that Orr dreams of a future without war, and Orr conjures up an alien invasion to bring everyone together against a common foe in order to achieve that. Funny things happen when Orr transforms the world.

George Orr’s dreams in Lathe of Heaven alter the course of events. Psychiatrist William Haber makes an effort to improve the world by using Orr’s gift. He requests that Orr imagine a world without racial conflict. The end consequence is a world where everyone has grey skin and resembles one another somewhat. Then he instructs Orr to have a dream in which people don’t fight anymore. As a result, humanity is united by an alien invasion. Haber is incredibly frustrated by Orr’s incapability, in his opinion. In the end, he creates the technology to give himself Orr’s gift. Yet, when he uses it, he alters reality.
