Tom wants to report the guy and child right away since he keeps meticulous records and his moral convictions have endured a horrifying war. But, Isabel argues that the child is a “gift from God,” and despite Tom’s disapproval, they claim the child as their own and give her the name Lucy. When Isabel is two years old, Tom and Isabel move back to the mainland and are prompted to consider the existence of other people. One of them is devastated by their decision.

Tom Sherbourne, a young serviceman who has just returned from the horrors of the First World War battlefields, accepts a position as a lighthouse keeper on the tiny island of Janus Rock, which is located off the coast between Albany and the fictitious community of Point Partageuse. The story is set in the South-West corner of Western Australia. Tom’s emotional wounds from the war are slowly beginning to heal thanks to the seclusion of the island and the regularity of keeping the light on and recording the weather. Both are overjoyed with love and optimism for the future when he falls in love with Isabel Graysmark, a stunning and independent young woman from Point Partageuse, and takes her to the island as his wife.

But, grief and Isabel’s intense desire to become a parent have clouded their love following a number of miscarriages and stillbirths. During a storm, Tom one day finds a boat on the island that washed ashore with a man’s body and a sobbing baby girl inside. Isabel convinces Tom to raise the child as their own instead of reporting the occurrence because she believes that the child was sent to them as a “gift from God.” The couple’s elation over their new daughter, though, is soon overwhelmed by the effects of their choice, which none of them could have predicted.
