You get a Turkish pleasure prize. Everyone is aware that C.S. Lewis’ Narnia series is a key contribution to modern fantasy. Nevertheless, I don’t believe Lewis is given enough credit for his skill as a writer. Those novels seem easy on the surface. Take a look at how he wrote The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe’s prologue. He places the joy of a new house in the country in the foreground and the shadows of the war in the background. Look at how he meticulously depicts every interaction between the four Pevensie children. And it’s unlike anything else in the literature up until he sends Lucy through the wardrobe (it’s on page 5 – he doesn’t waste time).
One of my all-time favourite books is The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, so it’s been fun to reread it and the other books in the series.
I first learned about the wonders of Narnia from this book. This is the book that inspired me to always be on the lookout for any potential portals leading to other worlds.
This book contains magic—rare and real magic—both magic from Narnia itself and enchantment from a book that is truly encompassing.
During the Blitz, the Pevensie children fled their house. They have been relocated to a foreign location for their safety, much like so many other kids in England during World War 2.
However, the story of the conflict is overshadowed by the exhilaration of first exploring the delights of the sprawling country estate where they are living and later the land of Narnia.
Along with Lucy, Susan, Edmund, and Peter, the reader shares in that discovery experience. Turkish Delight, anyone??) and the fast-paced adventure laced with magic combine to create a world that feels so authentic that I’ve never quite stopped searching for it outside the book’s pages. Other sensory details include the snow, fur coats, lamppost light, the cosy homes of Mr. Tumnus and the Beavers, and food. There was once a King or Queen in Narnia.
