The Lost World by Arthur Conan Doyle
Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 – 1930) was a British writer and physician who created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887. He was a superb sportsman who enjoyed skiing, climbing, and hiking, and he served as a ship’s doctor on a whaler and cared for the injured during the Boer War.
Sherlock Holmes is an intellectual ideal. He is a man who relies solely on his wit, refuses to bow down to anyone, and scorns the social norms that the majority of us are required to follow. When you read these stories when you’re 11 or 12, it’s obvious that Holmes leads the life of a perfect lad. His housemate is also his best buddy. When he gets hungry, he has a mother figure who will offer him hot food. He is allowed to use a firearm inside of his home, is allowed to be as dirty as he pleases, is allowed to don several different personas, and is allowed to go on exciting adventures while battling the bad guys. Beyond that, he is open to many different interpretations, as I already stated.

The Lost World is undoubtedly the one that most people should start with. In it, Professor George Edward Challenger is introduced. He is a self-important, hilarious, and dedicated scientist who finds a plateau in a South American jungle where dinosaurs still walk free. This is based on historical investigations that were actually taking place at the time. Jurassic Park was undoubtedly inspired by the book. One of the best classic representations of a vanished civilization.
I emphasize again and again that Conan Doyle is frequently very entertaining. Challenger is a comic character who is larger than life.
