The Memory of Love by Aminatta Forna

A catastrophic civil war in Sierra Leone today has left the entire population with secrets to keep. A talented young surgeon in the capital hospital is being threatened by demons that are plaguing him on a daily basis. A dying man who lived through the stormy postcolonial years of the country and has stories to tell that are far from heroic is lying in another room of the hospital. These guys are drawn unintentionally closer by a British psychologist with good intentions and into the path of the one woman at the centre of their stories as past and present collide in the bustling city.

The Memory of Love is a work of exquisite writing and rare knowledge that masterfully weaves together two generations of African life to tell a tale of grief, forgiveness, the lasting impacts of the past, and ultimately, the very nature of love.

This narrative takes place in Sierra Leone, an African country, during a period of time beginning in the late 1960s. Elias Cole, a driven British academic who wants to be regarded and published, is one of the key protagonists. He meets Julius, a fellow professor who is well-liked by his students and has a stunning wife named Saffia, and the two become sort of friends. At first glance, Elias develops an obsession with Saffia, and his resentment of Julius—which is tinged with some affection—becomes a prominent theme of the narrative.

A British guy named Adrian, who has moved to Sierra Leone to work as a psychologist at a nearby hospital, is one of the book’s other important characters. Adrian is married and still lives in England with his child, but he is visibly unhappy with both his job and his marriage. As a result, he feels the need to matter and be passionate about his career. The second main character in this tale is a native physician named Kai Manseray, a very intelligent and committed surgeon. When Kei begins occasionally sleeping and cooking at Adrian’s house, the two become friends.

Many of the people in this book adore their native country, but we also witness the cost of their loyalty. In this story, Agnes, a patient of Adrian’s, also makes an appearance. Agnes suffers from a bizarre disease that leads her to roam in a fugue-like state, and as the story progresses, we learn more about her past and the reasons behind her behaviour. The premise of this novel is excellent; in the scenes that are closest to the present, Elias Cole is approaching death and wants Adrian to hear his story. He seems to be looking for forgiveness, but we won’t learn why until the very end.

The premise of this novel is excellent; in the scenes that are closest to the present, Elias Cole is approaching death and wants Adrian to hear his story. He seems to be looking for forgiveness, but we won’t learn why until the very end. Although we don’t know what happened to Nenebah or what led to the breakdown of their relationship, we do know that Kei is a broken man who was once madly in love with her. It’s just a beautiful narrative, and I thought it to be extremely emotional with a great conclusion.
