The Obelisk Gate by N. K. Jemisin

Every day, Essun’s absent daughter gains strength and depending on her decisions, the entire planet could end. As society disappears into the protracted, chilly night, the season of endings grows darker. Essun—once Damaya, once a Syenite, and now an avenger—has found refuge, but her daughter has not. Alabaster Tenring, the world’s destroyer, is there instead and has a request. Essun’s fate would be permanently sealed, though, if she complies with his request. Her daughter Nassun is gaining power in a distant location, and her decisions will change the course of history.

The Fifth Season is left with earth’s civilisation starting to get ready for a new Season; here is where The Obelisk Gate picks off. What doesn’t swiftly kill them will eventually starve them to death. Essun, one of the most powerful Orogene in existence, is primarily the focus of this book as she attempts to live in a new community in an unusual place. She reconnects with former acquaintances who are now residents of this neighbourhood, but her attention is always focused on her daughter, who has been missing since The Fifth Season began. Essun encounters fresh issues and conundrums that transcend the confines of the neighbourhood where she lives.

Nassun’s plot is more interesting and distressing because, despite her father’s best efforts to get her to safety, he instead drags her into an unstable and hazardous scenario where she must deal with her own developing powers. The feeling that Nassun is what Essun could have become if she had been indulged more rather than tormented is a gloomy mirror to Essun’s childhood rearing as described in the earlier work.
