The Promised Neverland, Vol. 1 by Kaiu Shirai

Before it’s too late, the orphans of the Grace Field House orphanage must elude a gruesome fate. Emma and the other orphans of Grace Field House are enjoying their lives there. While their daily homework and tests are challenging, their devoted caregiver gives them wonderful meals and lots of recreation. However, perhaps everything is not as it seems…

The smartest children in Grace Field House are Emma, Norman, and Ray. The kids have all lived comfortably while being raised by the woman they call “Mom.” What more could an orphan want than healthy meals, fresh clothes, and a conducive learning environment? Emma and Norman eventually learn the grim reality of the outside world they are prohibited from viewing, though.

Children in an orphanage are the subject of this manga. There are fields and gardens outside the orphanage, followed by a huge wall. The kids believe they are in a happy place, but in truth, a civilization of demons that devour children’s brains exists beyond the wall. The brains of devils are more developed and more appetizing the smarter the child is. Sometimes a child is sold to the demons while purportedly being placed for adoption. The orphanage’s “mother” is actually a child farmer.

The three main characters, who are orphaned kids, eventually learn what’s going on. The artwork has an oddly childlike quality that kind of heightens the dread. There are so many layers and betrayals in this series, and I particularly dig the mental games. This manga, in my opinion, is appropriate for readers 11 and up.

The narrative centres on a group of orphans who live in the serene Grace Field orphanage under the guidance of the benevolent “Mom.” The test that our characters Emma, Ray, and Norman must take every day reveals that they are the smartest and most athletic of all the kids. The quiet orphanage looks to be running smoothly, but the tale really picks up steam when one of the kids is placed in a foster home.
