The Raven Song by Luanne G. Smith

When a witch escapes Victorian London, she discovers that her newfound liberty has both mortal and immortal dangers. Edwina Blackwood is in the process of unravelling her odd family tree for all time. She still finds it strange that her parents vanished. She is horrified by the dubious quality of her sister’s life and her premature passing. Her house and source of income have been reduced to ashes by spellfire. And now she’s being pursued by a cunning stalker. Edwina can’t wait to leave London as soon as possible, especially with supernatural detective Ian Cameron by her side.

She finds safety in Sir Henry Elvanfoot, a renowned wizard of the north, and is assured protection from malicious curses. However, something is wrong in this strange city of fairies and witches, where the barrier between our world and the Otherworld is about to be lifted. What else could account for Edwina’s unexpected prophetic visions? Or the worry that she’ll need the abilities of an old bloodline she’s only just starting to understand to survive whoever pursues her? Whatever awaits, Edwina, will finally have control over it. What will happen next? In this world or the Other, only time, cunning, and magic will be able to tell.

Edwina is still looking for answers about who she is and why she has the ability to transform into a raven while being a witch. After the passing of her sister, she is the last person remaining. Her father is also missing, and one day her mother left the house and never came back. She is left to fend for herself in this world, with only Ian to guide her in her quest for information about the person who appears to be chasing her and her true identity.

Ian leads Edwina to the only location where he believes he can offer protection from the stalker who is sending her unsettling letters and has cast a tracking spell on her. Back in his hometown, where he has friends who can assist him with ensuring her safety, there are more witches and Fae in the community. Still, the person pursuing Edwina is not who he seems to be, and Ian, whose memories Mary stole, may have gone to London especially looking for the sisters. He maintains a modest distance since he is unsure of himself and fears betraying Mary.

This is a compelling mystery where you occasionally get to glimpse the world through the villains’ eyes, revealing just how insane and depraved they really are. The reader feels more anxiety for Edwina as a result of the ominous stalker’s objectives.

The faery realm and the mortal world are about to become more permeable in Ian’s hometown as Sauwin approaches when the Fae will cross across for a night of celebration. Edwina has a role to play that will provide the answers to all of her inquiries about her, her sister, and her talent.

Writing-wise, Luanna G. Smith seems to become better with each book, and she has advanced considerably since The Vine Witch, her debut, and even The Raven Spell. She does a fantastic job at portraying the atmosphere of the city in the Victorian era and giving it a light magical touch.
