The book begins with a brief summary to refresh your memory of what has transpired up to this point, and then it begins with Gandalf and Pippen’s arrival at Minas Tirith. Tolkien does a fantastic job of capturing the tension in Minas Tirith in his writing. Everyone in the city is aware that this will be the location of Sauron’s next attack and that the outcome of the ensuing conflict will determine the future of humanity. We then travel to Rohan, where King Théoden is gathering the Rohirrim in an effort to provide aid to Gondor. In the upcoming fight, they will desperately need the valour of King Théoden’s calvary. The actual conflict at Pelennor Fields and its aftermath come next.
Here, we see how the ring has affected Frodo’s friendship with Sam and how he perceives Gollum to be a reflection of himself. You can feel how overwhelming carrying the Ring has become, and you can tell that Frodo is almost at his wit’s end. And to make matters worse, nobody can trust Gollum, who is guiding them toward Mount Doom while acting sly and cunning.
