Cal was recently divorced and had just left the Chicago Police Department. He felt the need to restart because of all the change and the newfound freedom. He had always imagined himself living in a peaceful rural home overseas, spending his days fishing and taking it easy. He made the decision to go to the Irish countryside, purchased a dilapidated home for a low price, and started renovating it. Soon after moving, Cal sensed that someone was keeping an eye on him. He eventually found Trey, his thirteen-year-old neighbour, loitering nearby and keeping an eye on him. Finally, Trey confessed that he had heard about Cal’s background as a police officer and that Cal had asked for his assistance.
Brendan, Trey’s older brother, left the house one day a few months ago without saying goodbye and hasn’t been seen since. The only one who appeared to be concerned about Brendan’s disappearance was Trey. Trey’s mother was of no use because she insisted Brendan leave their sleepy hamlet in search of a more interesting life in a larger metropolis. Due to the lack of employment options in their small community, the majority of young adults move away as soon as possible. It made sense for him to depart as well. The cops essentially stated the same thing and chose not to launch an investigation because Brendan was nineteen. Trey, however, did not have even a fleeting illusion that Brendan would simply disappear without saying goodbye or anything else. They had always been so close to one another!
Cal reluctantly decided to assist Trey after much convincing. However, the more he looked, the more opposition he met, and the less logical Brendan’s mysterious departure seemed. Cal was swiftly drawn back into the kind of circumstance he left his work and his country to avoid. There were many complex relationships throughout the plot. Cal was having trouble getting along with his ex-wife and was still perplexed as to why she had ended their marriage. Although he adored his adult daughter, he occasionally found it difficult to manage their connection without the assistance of his ex. He and Trey had a rocky beginning, and one of the plot’s great appeals was watching their relationship grow.
Cal spent a lot of time learning the “do’s and don’ts” of the unwritten rules that unmistakably governed all interactions as a newcomer in the small, close-knit community. It was both challenging and fascinating.
