The Sirens of Titan by Kurt Vonnegut

An outrageous journey across space, time, and morality is The Sirens of Titan. Malachi Constant, the richest and most filthy man on Earth, is given the opportunity to travel through space with a stunning woman by his side. The invitation comes with a catch, of course, as does a prophetic vision that only Vonnegut has the guts to share about the meaning of existence.

Every fifty-nine days, Winston Niles Rumfoord and his dog Kazak materialize for a few hours at their residence on Earth. They are chronosynclastically infundibulated. Until one day when Malachi Constant is allowed to watch and participate in one of Rumfoord’s materializations, the manifestations have always been a private affair. Rumfoord, who is infundibulated, is aware of a variety of things. He is aware that Constant will visit Mars, Mercury, Earth, and one of Saturn’s moons, Titan, before returning to Earth. Constant, of course, doesn’t trust him and exits the materialization right away. The initial Rumfoord forecast turns out to be accurate quite quickly. We learn more about Malachi Constant and how uncaring the cosmos is as we investigate a new planet.

A science fiction novel that reads like a fairy tale, it follows the turbulent life of Malachi Constant, who was born the world’s richest person. We discover the “real” history of humanity’s past and foreseeable future through his exploits. This novel is exceptional in that every word is flawless; not a single sentence has been added for extra padding, and each character, each conversation, and each description advances the plot. It contains the ironic jabs for which Vonnegut is renowned, but they are offset with incredibly beautiful moments.

The narrative describes the lives of three individuals who are affected by factors outside of their control. William Niles Rumsfoord travelled into space with his dog, and as a result of some bizarre occurrence (I won’t try to spell it) he has broken free from the bonds of time and space, appearing at his home on Earth every 59 days (take that, Billy Pilgrim!). Beatrice Rumsfoord, his wife, has little interest in him. Then, one day, Rumsfoord requests a visit from his cousin Malachi Constant. Constant is a spoiled millionaire playboy who has done nothing with his life despite having inherited money from his father.

Constant is informed by Rumsfoord that he will travel around the Solar System, first to Mars, then Mercury, returning to Earth, and then arriving at Titan, where he will encounter the three alluring women who serve as the title’s sirens.

Well, this does occur, but nothing turns out the way Constant anticipated. Also caught up in it is Beatrice. Rumsfoord appears to be controlling everyone in the Solar System, but whose hands are he really holding?
