The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lauren

Jess Davis is a single mom and a data and statistics whiz, but no amount of math can persuade her to enter the dating scene again. In addition, her ex-husband decided he wasn’t “father material” before her kid was even born, her father never showed up, and her hard-partying mother left when she was six. Jess keeps her loved ones near, but it’s difficult—and lonely—to labour nonstop to survive.

Jess learns about GeneticAlly, a hot new DNA-based matchmaking business that is expected to revolutionize dating. Using DNA to find your soul mate? Accuracy of numbers Jess has a grasp. She believed she did, at least, until her test revealed an improbable 98 per cent match with another person in the database: Dr River Pea, the founder of GeneticAlly.

She is unable to comprehend this particular number because she is already familiar with Dr Pea. She can be sure that the arrogant, unyielding man is not her soul mate. However, GeneticAlly is offering a reward if you get to know him. Despite her doubts about the initiative and her distaste for River, Jess—who is barely getting by—is unable to refuse it. Jess starts to suspect that there may be more to the scientist—and the science underlying a soulmate—than she first imagined as the two are dragged from one event to the next as the “Diamond” pairing that might send GeneticAlly’s worth sky-high.

This novel was a lot of fun to read and was also interesting, lovely, and romantic. Jess always put her family first, including her daughter Juno and her grandparents, and she was such a brilliant, kind, sweet, and kind person. Jess was the kind of woman who struggled to make ends meet while also making sure her family had everything they could possibly need through her freelance work as a statistician. To put it another way, Jess didn’t really have time for herself. In fact, Jess was conscious that she didn’t have the same amount of time for herself as she had back in her younger and undergraduate years.

I found Jess’ ability to prioritize Juno as a single mother and make that her top priority to be incredibly remarkable. Jess was delightful and endearing, and how could anyone not fall in love with her? Jess and Felicity’s hangout in Twiggs would be exactly what I’d want to do. Now for the dark, reserved, talkative, and beautiful River Pena. Since River typically ordered an Americano at Twiggs, it’s funny that Jess always referred to him as an “Americano” before learning his real name, but it’s quite suitable for River.

In the beginning, River appeared a little “grumpy” because he and Jess didn’t start out well and because of his brief and muted replies to everything (which kind of annoyed Jess at first). Fortunately, as River and Jess began spending time together, going on dates, etc., River grew more comfortable talking to Jess about himself, and his family, and even showing more affection. Not to add, I found it quite endearing and sweet to watch the bond between River and Juno develop. Even though Jess and River were originally dubious about their compatibility scores being so high, it was clear that they had a connection right away.
