The Tennis Handsome by Barry Hannah
Hannah introduces the reader to a pretty-boy worldwide tennis star, his dedicated manager, his gay coach, and a shell-shocked but sane Vietnam veteran while spinning the wild narrative of four restless sons of Vicksburg, Mississippi. Their exploits include being raped by a walrus, being killed with a crossbow, and competing in a tennis match under duress. Both Hannah’s creativity and his writing are brilliant.

It’s a wild book that is difficult to describe. The plot is difficult to convey because each sentence is mad and perfect in its own unique way. It’s just a really bizarre, messed-up book. There is a walrus rape, a crossbow murder, and a tennis match held under duress. The protagonist, a seasoned and troubled man who was an excellent tennis player, is known as the tennis handsome. The book chronicles the long-term love interactions between him and his former coach. It also gives some excellent explanations of tennis’ peculiar beauty.
