It’s not at all surprising that The Thursday Murder Club has been successful. Why not adore it? Every Thursday, four seniors in the same retirement community meet in the Jigsaw Room to talk about unsolved crimes. However, when a local developer is found dead, the Thursday Murder Club is forced to deal with their first “live” case.
The entire characters and plot are mouthwatering. Many stories are clever and worth the occasional cynical smirk, but The Thursday Murder Club is amusing, kind, and thoroughly enjoyable—a true pleasure to read. How frequently do you typically smile or giggle when reading about a murder case, after all? Osman has transformed a depressing genre into one that is both enjoyable and inspiring.
Although I had heard about the Thursday Murder Club books for a while, I had never really read one. I didn’t aware they were essentially British cozy mysteries with elderly members of a senior housing estate as the protagonist investigators who are surrounded by secrets that some people are prepared to kill to keep hidden.
The supporting characters in addition to the main detective are an essential component of a successful murder mystery. Although it’s unclear if there is a principal detective, in this case, the collective (Joyce, Elizabeth, Ibrahim, and Ron) and the supporting police presence provided by Donna and Chris undoubtedly contribute to the book’s relaxed atmosphere.
