With the exception of a weak tie to Isaac Bell, Dirk Pitt’s first adventure in the book takes place in the present and has nothing to do with the main plot. Bell’s connection to what actually transpired is revealed to him in the narrative (and no one else is left with a closer connection). The last chapter is also by Pitt.
Just now, Dirk Pitt prevented the destruction of a century-old submarine. Isaac Bell’s journal is now available to Pitt. Pitt reads about the alleged nine-miner fatality Little Angel Mine catastrophe there. Isaac Bell is now required to ascertain the truth regarding the mine and the miners.
Byzantium, a rare and potent element, piqued the miners’ interest. It has a multi-million dollar value. But the miners’ ordeal is far from ended. Additionally, the French are willing to fight for the rare element because they are also interested in it. Pitt will visit both the British Isles and the Novaya Zemlya islands during the course of the narrative. He will be pursued relentlessly by those who want to see him killed.
