The Trouble with Peace by Joe Abercrombie
Peace is merely a different kind of battleground. Savine dan Glokta, formerly the most influential investor in Adua, discovers her judgment, wealth, and reputation in ruins. She will let no scruples stand in the way of her achieving all of her goals, though, since she still has them.
Peace is an ordeal that needs to be over as soon as possible for heroes like Leo dan Brock and Stour Nightfall, who are only content with their swords drawn. Rikke must learn to control the power of the Long Eye before it kills her, but first grievances must be nursed, power must be gained, and allies must be collected. All spheres of society are affected by the unrest. While noblemen quarrel for their own gain, the Breakers continue to hide in the shadows planning to release the common man from his chains.

The characters are incredibly well-developed, realistic individuals who experience growth and development, and have flaws, morality, strengths, and weaknesses. Some of the characters are vicious, while others are too naïve for their own good, ambitious, or resigned to their circumstances.
Rebellion, conflicts, struggles, winners and losers, twists and turns—some of which were anticipated, some less so. What a journey! With each new book, I find Joe Abercrombie’s wonderful, epic stories to be even more enjoyable. I can’t wait to conclude the Age of Madness with Wisdom of Crowds, which is his best work to date, but I will be sad to finish it because there isn’t another Abercrombie book out right now.
