The Undertaking of Hart and Mercy by Megan Bannen

Hart, a marshal, is in charge of policing Tanria’s odd and mystical wilderness. Hart’s job is punishing, and all he has is time to reflect on his loneliness. Mercy is never given a quiet minute. She has been working alone to keep Birdsall & Son Undertakers afloat in defiance of sourpusses like Hart, who always seems to pop up when she least expects it. Hart finds himself writing a letter to “A Friend” after yet another frustrating encounter with Mercy. He receives an anonymous letter in response, much to his astonishment, and a shaky connection begins. If only Hart was aware that Mercy, the person who irritates him the most, has been receiving his soul. The unlikely correspondents also get closer as the threat from Tanria gets bigger. But will their budding romance endure the fateful realization that their pen buddies are each other’s greatest nightmares?

The most unexpected and peculiar book I’ve ever liked was this one. This book has unimaginable levels of emotion that can be felt between the lines. My face hurt from smiling, I sobbed excessively, and I was so angry that the creases on my forehead grew. I experienced the complete range of feelings. Everything I didn’t realize I needed was there.

Underneath a thick coating of unresolved guilt, grief, and depression, Hart is a cinnamon bun Demi-god. Mercy is a woman working in a field that is largely dominated by men. She loves her family dearly, and that love extends to the work she does to help the dead enter the hereafter.

We get to see as they learn what it really means to be themselves because they are both misunderstood by those around them. It was lovely to watch them communicate and spill all of their secrets to a secret pen pal, unaware that the other person is their “worst enemy.” Their relationship was lovely. Hart and Duckers were a sweet couple, and I adored their bond. Throughout the entire novel, my heart simply kept melting and I could genuinely sense each character’s emotions. She did a good job of making sadness and family issues understandable on the paper. Despite the fact that I don’t have siblings or a family that runs a business, I could relate to the characters’ feelings as she portrayed them.
