One of Gorey’s best pieces, it is a wordless mystery.

It was a true epiphany. They were clearly not comics; they were picture books for adults. And I had no knowledge of them. They were simply so unique. The fact that they were created in the 20th century is evident if you give it some thought, but they appear so archaic because, while being drawn from the 1960s onward, they are set in a pre-20th century, or at the very least, pre-war environment. They are darkly humorous. They differed significantly from what I had anticipated in every way. They weren’t ugly like most comics are; even many excellent comics are often ugly or boldly or graphically produced in a very amateurish manner. Gorey, however, drew quite subtly.
One of Gorey’s best wordless works is “The West Wing.” Each of the 30 spare pictures begs to be gazed at for a while. Spend some time with it and take in what is there and what isn’t there by imagining these pieces on display at a museum. Each scene contains a story that the author does not openly tell us about. Each room that is empty, any small damage to the walls, or a lonely object sparks your imagination. a puzzle that, in the end, your mind solves.
More than any of Gorey’s more well-known works, I expected this wordless book to wow me, and it did. You only need to observe a skilled illustrator’s careful penstroke in order to “understand the picture.” What Gorey opted not to show us accounts for a large portion of the work’s intensity; it also serves as part of the work’s intended humour. the most beautiful addition to any library.
