Tiamat’s Wrath by James S. A. Corey

To various solar systems throughout the cosmos, thirteen hundred portals have opened. The mysteries and dangers, however, become more complex as mankind establishes its interstellar empire on the alien ruins.

Elvi Okoye begins a frantic search for information about a massacre that occurred before the first humans existed and for weapons to fight a war against unimaginably powerful opponents in the dead systems where gates lead to wilder things than foreign planets. But she might not be able to afford the cost of such information.

Teresa Duarte is getting ready to carry the weight of her father’s deity-like ambition in the centre of the kingdom. Two of the dangers in a palace full of intrigue are the sociopath scientist Paolo Cordozar and the Mephistophelian prisoner James Holden, but Teresa has her own mind and secrets that even her father, the emperor, is unaware of.

The crew of the Rocinante, which is dispersed over the vast human empire, bravely engages in a rear-guard action against Duarte’s totalitarian government. The old order is no longer remembered, and it becomes more and more likely that Laconia will rule forever, ushering in a conflict that humanity can only lose. For courage and ambition alone won’t be sufficient to fend off the dangers that lurk between realms.

Tiamat’s Wrath doesn’t start out a lot brighter. A leader of the resistance, Naomi has undergone a change that truly makes me think of Leia’s transformation into General Organa. Tiamat’s Wrath is best described as “the Rebellion from Star Wars but seen through a grim, Battlestar Galactica style lense.” Mostly by herself, Naomi hides in shipping containers while being trafficked throughout the known cosmos. The resistance fleet, which consists primarily of one ship that hides, is led by Bobbie and Alex. Amos hasn’t been heard from in about ten years after being dispatched on a covert mission to save Holden. Holden is still a captive with scant to no authority.

And get this: Holden isn’t a prominent POV character for the first time. He is both the beginning and the end. maybe even a break? But that’s pretty much all. He has served as our anchor throughout the entire series, and now Duarte has removed him not just from his crew and family but also from us.

In Tiamat’s Wrath, there are four main points of view. Naomi, of course. In the hopeless pursuit of overthrowing the empire, she is establishing networks of resistance. Alex, from whose portions we can also see Bobbie. The daughter of the tyrant, Teresa Duarte, is a brand-new character. While her father intends to become immortal, he is preparing Teresa to be his successor in case he needs a fallback.

The scientist Elvi, who was initially introduced in Cibula Burn, is back. She has reluctantly advanced to the position of high-ranking scientist in the empire, researching the culture responsible for the proto-molecule. as well as whatever it was that killed them.

The Expanse series has always featured mysterious extraterrestrial presences and artefacts, but the conflict is primarily caused by how cruel humans can be to one another (not particularly surprising). But this issue has been developing in the novels for a very long time: what led to the collapse of the civilization that created the protomolecule? Will they come back to wipe off humanity then?
