Unhinged is a brave effort that shows the authors’ successful attempt to avoid falling prey to the tropes and conventions of the genre. They put Alexander Blix in a terrible situation when he is made to experience every parent’s worst nightmare when his daughter, Iselin, finds herself in mortal danger due to being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The first portion of the novel is focused on Blix’s frantic efforts to assist her, while the second section shows us how the beloved hero falls under the weight of regret and shame.

It is uncommon for fiction writers to subject their heroes to such suffering, but this brave choice pays off as the reader can concentrate on the troubled inner world of a guy who has lost everything and is trying to hang onto life by all means possible, in addition to the main plot.

The plot opens with a shooting inside Sofia Kovic’s Oslo flat, where Iselin also resides when she visits the city. Sofia Kovic is a homicide detective and one of Blix’s closest friends. Iselin is attacked, but she manages to flee and call her father, who rushes to her aid.

Authorities launched an investigation into Kovic’s final cases in an effort to catch the murderer, and they quickly learn that the connection between multiple, initially unrelated cases that the victim studied in her final days holds the key to her death. Despite her best efforts, Iselin is forced to watch the fatal incident, and because of her struggle with the attacker, she is seen as a crucial witness in the inquiry. Until Iselin is kidnapped one day in the midst of the day in the heart of the town, Blix and Emma make an effort to support her.

This is the third book in the “Blix and Ramm” series, which was created in partnership with Jorn Lier Horst and Thomas Enger, two of the best writers of Norwegian crime fiction. The former author is most known for his Wisting series, which was made into a television series with Sven Nordin playing the lead role. Enger is the author of the outstanding Henning Jull series, which has five books overall and numerous noteworthy standalone, including the fantastic Inborn. The writing styles and themes chosen by the authors differ significantly, making this collaboration all the more intriguing as we get to see how two different voices come together. The two protagonists, Horst, an ex-police officer, and Enger, a journalist, are each created using the author’s past professional experience as a model. As a result, the characters feel real and honest.
