The Savvy, Sexy, Singles Club was founded by divorcee Vanessa Jared, who was in her 40s, as she and her friends began to go forward with their “Do Me” portions of their life.
But on the second anniversary, a seductive sheriff knocks on Vanessa’s home asking for her assistance in stopping his little sister from marrying her bad ex. Vanessa is not at all interested in this. When she sees a picture of her ex’s new fiancée wearing her grandmother’s ring, which he obviously stole, she decides she no longer wants anything to do with her ex.
I became aware of how infrequently I see romantic books about women in their forties, particularly Black women in their forties, with Vanessa Jared’s Got a Man by LaQuette. The fact that Michael, the love interest, is an American of Koren descent also helped me appreciate how uncommon it is for a person of colour to fall in love with a person of white skin. This book truly brought me joy. These two knew how to communicate and held fairly strong limits, perhaps because they were older. Oh, and the hot scenes were enjoyable as well!
The characters in this story were what I adored the most. There is just so much to them, and the audio version’s narration brought an extra layer of complexity that I thoroughly liked. Even the supporting cast members were vividly brought to life. On that, though, more later in other areas.
The premise is both humorous and meaningful. Karl, Vanessa’s ex-husband, is remarrying, and he informed his future spouse that Vanessa was deceased. When his fiancé’s brother looked into Karl because he thought something wasn’t right, he found that his first wife, Vanessa, was still alive and well. He, therefore, requested that she visit his small town and expose Karl for the lie that he is. The tale is what happens after that. Some elements will make you laugh out loud.
