Author Lowen Ashleigh had a terrible morning in the first scene of Verity. Her mother battled colon cancer for a year before passing away the week before. Lowen brought her mother to her apartment and took care of her for the last nine months of her life despite having a terrible connection with her mother, “a direct result of my own mother being scared of me,” as she explains. Because Lowen frequently experiences sleepwalking episodes, her mother kept her mostly alone as a youngster out of concern for what Lowen might be capable of.

She is led into a coffee shop bathroom by a beautiful stranger who practically gives her the shirt off his back. After a brief conversation, Loewn determines that he “wants to blend in with the metropolis. exactly like me.” After all, she relocated to New York in order to join the city’s millions of invisible inhabitants. She has previously declined to market her novels because they haven’t sold well enough for her publisher to award her another contract.

Lowen is astonished to discover that the man whose shirt she is wearing is attending the same meeting when she gets to her publisher’s office. He is Jeremy Crawford, Verity Crawford’s spouse. Verity is a well-known novelist who is unable to finish the book series she was working on. The final three books in the series will be written by Lowen for a flat cost of $75,000 for each book, with the first instalment due in six months. Until Jeremy tells her that he chose her because Verity read one of Lowen’s books and it was one of her favourites, Lowen is prepared to decline the invitation.

She allegedly informed Jeremy that Lowen was going to be “the next great thing” and that their writing styles were comparable. Following the passing of both of her children, Chastin and Harper, Verity was severely hurt in a car accident, leaving Jeremy to care for their little boy, Crew, by himself. In the end, Lowen consents to take on the task.
