Author Jennifer Crusie is known for producing fantastic romance books with hilarious comedies. In Welcome to Temptation, she does not let us down. The mayor of Temptation, Ohio, is Phin. His passion for books and his bookstore outweigh his interest in politics. But when his constituents approach him with tales of a film crew visiting Temptation, he is forced to take action. It’s possible that the crew is recording porn. The father of Sophie, along with her two younger siblings, is a thief and con man. Sophie steps in to take care of her brother and sister after their mother passes away. She goes to Temptation with the film team to support her younger sister, an aspiring filmmaker. Sparks flare when Sophie and Phin first meet, and despite various challenges, they fall in love.
The book’s strengths are its humour, its character development of Phin, who learns who he really is and begins acting like the person he wants to be (which is not a politician), and the character development of Sophie, who has always taken care of everyone but now needs to learn how to accept being taken care of (by Phin, of course). But the book’s greatest strength is that Sophie finds the role that is absolutely made for her in her new life in Temptation.
Sophie Dempsey, 32, was raised in a poor neighbourhood and never belonged to a particular group in high school, especially not the popular set. She was a “Dempsey,” a criminal family’s descendant. Her mother had cautioned her about the rich “town boys,” who would make fun of the poor low life. All those “town boys,” with their flawless bodies and looks, were born into flawless households. But Sophie is incredibly smart and funny—nobody takes her for a fool. And nothing seems to be changing in her life. Her personal life is at most average, and she doesn’t appear to have a bright future.
Fourth-generation Mayor of the township of Temptation is Phineas T. Tucker. He’s not doing it voluntarily; he’s following in his ancestors’ footsteps in doing what is required of him. His entire life is planned out. Although he is dissatisfied with his life, he is unable to imagine doing anything different. He’s a charming, astute, and well-mannered “town boy.” He has a good heart, and is courteous, witty, and haughty. And he decides to avoid Sophie after the first time he meets her since he perceives her as “devil candy.”
Dramatically and delectably profound, this narrative is superb. Two people, each of whose lives are spent doing only the things that are expected of them and who so miss out on opportunities for much more. and discovering their solutions in one another. I agree, Ms Crusie.
