The world has altered significantly in post-apocalyptic Africa, yet one area still sees widespread tribal genocide. A woman who has endured the destruction of her village as well as a horrific rape at the hands of an enemy general wanders into the desert in the hope of passing away. Instead, she gives birth to a vengeful baby girl with a sand-coloured complexion and hair. Despite being an American, Okorafor’s parents were both born in Nigeria, and she spent a lot of her youth travelling back and forth. She was essentially immersed in parts of her family’s and the locals’ cultures there, and she frequently draws on them in her writing. I believe that the majority of her work is inspired by African landscapes, tribal conflicts, traditions, beliefs, etc. On one level, Who Fears Death is undoubtedly one of those tales, despite the author’s claim that it is utterly modern. Because it deals with ethnic warfare and the horrific things that people do in them, such as weaponized rape, it is directly taken from today’s headlines.
That serves as the story’s main narrative motivator. In some ways, it’s possible that the book gives readers who might otherwise find it impossible to accept these modern realities a means to enter into the dreadful things that are currently taking on all around us. This connects to the structural significance I mentioned earlier. When you look at the situation’s structure, which is almost impossible to do in real-world scenarios, you can see what’s going on. Perhaps at this point, we can step in to prevent it.
