With No One As Witness by Elizabeth George

The biggest task of Detective Inspector Thomas Lynley’s career awaits him. When a teenage boy’s naked body is discovered draped over a tomb in a cemetery, the authorities identify the victim as one of a London serial killer who has been killing youngsters. The murderer had claimed four victims, but this is his first white victim.

New Scotland Yard accepts the case and turns it over to Lynley, his colleagues Detective Constable Barbara Havers and Detective Sergeant Winston Nkata in an effort to avoid accusations of institutionalized prejudice in their refusal to fully investigate the earlier crimes. The psychopath kills with no intention of being stopped. However, a terrible tragedy inside their ranks makes the police stumble in their pursuit, which could have even more tragic results.

He, Barbara Naveed, and Winston Just are on the hunt for a serial killer who is killing young boys while Helen is pregnant. Lynley discovers that being a father is making him more sensitive to such things. With George’s exceptional eye, a large number of supporting, suspect, and official figures are depicted. George’s sure hand guides you where you need to go despite the fact that several subplots develop around and contradict the primary story. One of the most challenging—and brilliant—books in an almost flawless series is this one. Whatever her subject, Elizabeth George would be a brilliant and well-respected writer.

Elizabeth George consistently lives up to expectations. I’ve been reading about Inspector Lynley and company for years, and this novel kept me turning the pages just as much as the others. This time, Lynley and Havers look into a string of killings in London that appear to have a racial undertone. They both hustle desperately to try and identify the murderer as the killings increase. As in all prior books, the story of their personal lives continues to develop in the meantime, frequently being influenced by events relating to their jobs.
